IOM Nigeria Flash Report #289: Population Displacement - North-west Nigeria - Zamfara State - Natural Disaster/Windstorm (16 May 2026)

On 15 May 2026, windstorm occurred in the communities of Yar Duste in Magaji Gari ward, Yar Dusa in Shiyar Ra ward and Dan Fago in Uban Dawaki ward of Gummi Local Government Area, Zamfara State. According to key informants, the windstorm displaced 968 individuals from 242 households, including 542 children, 247 women, and 179 men. Of the displaced population, 372 individuals moved from Yar Duste to the community of Sabon Gari in Magaji Gari ward, 324 from Yar Dusa to the communities of Algatawa and Kofar Jaro in Shiyar Ra ward, and 272 from Dan Fago to the communities of Dada and Bakin Kasuwa in Uban Dawaki ward. A total of nine injuries were reported and 112 shelters were affected by the windstorm. Following the incident, Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) field staff conducted rapid assessments on 16 May 2026 to inform the humanitarian community, as well as the government and partners, and to enable a more targeted response. Non-food items (NFIs), and shelter were the most prevalent needs identified. Other reported need included food.
