Former French prime minister Édouard Philippe, a centrist seen as one of the leading contenders to replace President Emmanuel Macron in next year's presidential race, is the target of an investigation probing alleged embezzlement of public funds, the national financial prosecutor's office said Tuesday. Polls suggest that Philippe could win against the far-right National Rally party.
