US Government backs expanded humanitarian response to Tropical Cyclone Maila

With generous funding assistance of USD 2 million (approximately PGK 8.4 million) from the United States Government, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Government of Papua New Guinea (GoPNG), is expanding its emergency response to Tropical Cyclone Maila to complement and reinforce national efforts across the affected provinces. Tropical Cyclone Maila triggered a sudden‑onset humanitarian emergency across Milne Bay, East New Britain, West New Britain, New Ireland, and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), overwhelming local coping capacities and requiring urgent, coordinated life‑saving action. Severe access challenges in remote outer islands and low‑lying atolls limited assessment coverage in some of the hardest‑hit communities, leaving critical information gaps during the initial emergency phase.
