China raises ‘discrimination’ claim over Misamis steel plant detentions

MANILA, Philippines — The Chinese Embassy in Manila on Wednesday accused Philippine authorities of possible “discriminatory” treatment against 69 Chinese nationals arrested during a raid on a steel manufacturing facility in Misamis Oriental, while also questioning the legal basis for their continued detention. Chinese Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Zhou Zhiyong said the embassy had written to several Philippine agencies to raise concerns about the May 15 interagency operation by the National Bureau of Investigation, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other agencies at a steel company within the Phividec Industrial Estate.
