BFAR warns beachgoers of jellyfish stings during summer months

MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — As temperatures rise this summer, beachgoers are advised to take precautions against jellyfish stings, which can sometimes be fatal. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said jellyfish are more common during the summer months, particularly from April to June, when seawater temperatures are higher. A 2005 study by P.J. Fenner, Venomous Jellyfish of the World, noted that box jellyfish envenomations often occur in shallow waters when winds are weak and the sea is calm.
