Situation Overview Throughout April 2026, living conditions across the Gaza Strip remained dire, with most people still displaced and exposed to rising public health risks alongside ongoing strikes causing civilian casualties. Vector-borne risks linked to solid waste accumulation near displacement sites remained high, with rodents, cockroaches, ies and other pests proliferating and contributing to the spread of disease. Aid entry into Gaza increased between 14 and 20 April compared with the previous week, attributed in part to the reopening of Zikim Crossing on 13 April. However, major impediments persisted. A Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, released on 20 April, found that over two years of war had caused catastrophic infrastructure damage, with total recovery and reconstruction needs estimated at US$71.4 billion over the next decade. Over 370,000 housing units and nearly all schools had been destroyed or damaged, while human development in Gaza was assessed to have been set back by 77 years. The humanitarian shelter response continued in April but faced signicant pipeline constraints. The timely release of materials — particularly solar lights, timber framing kits, ropes and tools — remain essential to enable partners to scale up repairs of partially damaged shelters and support a transition toward early recovery. Aid workers and service providers continued to face immense risks throughout the month, as a WHO contractor and two from UNICEF were killed on duty. The Humanitarian Country Team condemned the killings.
