Country: Somalia Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations The latest released IPC analysis for Somalia (14/05) indicates an alarming deterioration of the food insecurity and malnutrition situation in country, with Burhakaba District likely at risk of famine. 6 million people, i.e. around 1 in 3 Somalis, are projected to be in acute food insecurity by June 2026, including close to 1.9 million in IPC4 (Emergency Phase). 1.88 million children under 5 are to be affected by acute malnutrition by December. This represents a 9% increase in overall food insecurity, an 18% increase in IPC4, and a 2% increase in malnutrition-affected children with respect to the February IPC projections covering the same period. Main interlinked factors behind the deterioration are poor Gu rains, escalating food prices exacerbated by the conflict in the Middle East, conflict and insecurity, and heightened flood risks in riverine areas. With just 17% of the HNRP funded, humanitarian assistance in Somalia needs to be urgently scaled up to avoid excess morbidity and mortality.
