HIGHLIGHTS At least 16,000 people / 4,124 families have been displaced across Ancuabe, Montepuez and Nangade districts since mid-April due to attacks and continued fear of attacks by non-State Armed Groups (NSAG). Armed clashes between parties to the conflict and violence against civilians were also recorded in several districts, however, displacements from these areas remain limited, corroborating feedback from affected communities on increasing reluctance towards large-scale displacement. Majority of the incidents occurred in districts with the highest severity of needs (Severity-4) under the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan District authorities have provided an initial response to the affected population in Ancuabe, assisting 91 families (approximately 255 people) with food support. The INGO-led Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) has been activated, with plans underway to support displaced families in Ancuabe and Montepuez. Protection partners have conducted a rapid assessment that identified key protection risks of the affected population. There is an observed lag between the displacement alert and response activation, leaving affected populations without timely assistance that exacerbate vulnerabilities, heighten reliance on negative coping mechanisms and driving unsafe returns. SITUATION OVERVIEW Since mid-April, NSAGs have carried out attacks across the districts of Macomia, Mocimboa da Praia, Nangade, Ancuabe, Meluco, Montepuez, Mueda, Palma and Chiure, causing widespread civilian harm and displacement in areas already facing some of the highest levels of humanitarian need.
