UNFPA Situation Report: Chad Humanitarian Response (1 - 30 April 2026)

The humanitarian crisis in Chad continued to intensify throughout April, driven by the sustained influx of refugees and escalating regional insecurity. As of 26 April 2026, the number of registered arrivals from Sudan reached 926,421. Women and children constitute 87 per cent of this population, highlighting the urgent need for specialized sexual and reproductive health and protection services. In late April, violent clashes over access to water in Wadi Fira Province resulted in 42 casualties. The deteriorating security situation has created additional logistical constraints for humanitarian actors operating in this fragile border region, further hampering emergency response efforts. In Lac Province, failing infrastructure in displacement sites is heightening protection risks. A safety audit conducted by the GBV Working Group, led by UNFPA, found that 96 per cent of sites lack nighttime lighting, 60 per cent of water points are non-functional, and 68 per cent of residents do not have access to latrines, creating critical protection and health risks. In Adré, near the Sudanese border, the health situation deteriorated rapidly over the course of just a few weeks. Concurrent outbreaks of measles and meningitis C have claimed dozens of lives, overwhelmed referral pathways, and forced the diversion of already limited resources toward epidemic containment. During the first half of April alone, 161 measles cases and 101 meningitis cases were reported in Adré. Pregnant women and newborns are particularly vulnerable, facing increased risks of miscarriage, premature labour, and neonatal death.
