Western Manus Marine Sanctuary proposal marks PNG’s 30‑by‑30 Commitment
Papua New Guinea has taken a major step forward in its 30‑by‑30 ocean protection mission with the announcement of the Western Manus National Marine Sanctuary during the inaugural Melanesian Ocean Summit. Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Jelta Wong proposed the sanctuary, covering 214,000 square kilometres, making it the largest no‑take Naturally Protected Area (NPA) in Melanesia. The sanctuary will account for 9 percent of Papua New Guinea’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
