New Duterte lawyer seeks another fitness review ahead of ICC trial

MANILA, Philippines — The new defense counsel of former President Rodrigo Duterte has sought another fitness review ahead of his trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Duterte’s defense counsel, Peter Haynes, made the request on May 15, arguing that setting a trial date would be “inappropriate” given “unresolved factors,” including questions surrounding the former president’s competence. “In particular, the Defense position is that a commencement is contingent upon a determination by the Trial Chamber of Mr Duterte’s fitness to stand trial… the Defense will request that this issue is revisited by the Trial Chamber,” Haynes wrote.
