Unfinished infrastructure and the upcoming 2027 National General Election have forced the National Executive Council (NEC) to push the Southern Highlands PNG Games back to 2028. ​While acknowledging significant progress made by the PNG Sports Foundation, the Southern Highlands Provincial Government, the Host Organising Committee, and local MPs, the NEC determined that critical sporting facilities, accommodation centers, and supporting infrastructure are not yet operationally ready to host an event of this magnitude.
