Prime Minister James Marape has assured the nation that the Government will approach the Ombudsman Commission’s referral involving Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika with the utmost care, diligence, and full respect for the Constitution and the independence of the Judiciary. The Prime Minister’s comments follow the Ombudsman Commission’s announcement on Monday, 11 May 2026, that it had invoked its reserve powers under Section 29(2) of the Constitution and Section 27(3) of the Organic Law on the Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership to refer the Chief Justice to the National Executive Council (NEC) for consideration of the appointment of a Leadership Tribunal.
