Country: India Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations On 13 May, severe thunderstorms accompanied by rain, hail, lightning and strong winds struck the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, resulting in multiple fatalities and extensive damage. Media reports from 15 May put the death toll at 111, with the highest number of deaths – at least 21 – recorded in the town of Prayagraj, and 59 people injured. In addition, 227 houses were damaged, trees were uprooted, and 170 livestock were killed. Power outages were also reported. The Uttar Pradesh government launched relief and rescue operations, instructed local administrations to conduct rapid damage assessments, and announced compensation for affected families. Over the subsequent 24 hours, further rain is forecast for Uttar Pradesh and for other parts of northern, eastern, central and southwestern India.
