The Government of Papua New Guinea has taken an important step toward strengthening the country’s leadership in global ocean governance through the advancement of the ratification of the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement). The National Executive Council has endorsed the submission for the Agreement to be tabled before Parliament for formal ratification and has directed the Department of Foreign Affairs to continue progressing the necessary domestic processes.
