Description On the afternoon of Sunday, 31 May 2026, a severe rainstorm accompanied by a violent windstorm swept through Tom-Gangare community in Hawan Kibo of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, in Nigeria’s North-Central region. The storm, which followed a prolonged and heavy downpour, generated destructive winds that tore through the rural settlement over a matter of hours, leaving a trail of widespread structural damage and deep humanitarian need in its wake. 100+ residential houses were destroyed across the community. The destruction was not limited to homes: health facilities, places of worship, educational centres and other critical community infrastructure were also damaged, stripping the population of the very services they would ordinarily rely upon in the aftermath of a disaster. The violent winds uprooted numerous mature trees, many of which crashed onto residential buildings and compounded the scale of the damage, while property and household assets worth millions of naira were reported lost. No fatalities have been reported, and this remains the single point of relief in an otherwise grave situation. However, the human impact is severe. Scores of families have been displaced and rendered homeless, and many have been left without shelter, food, clean water and other basic necessities. With homes flattened and livelihoods disrupted, affected households are now exposed to the elements and to heightened protection and health risks, particularly among women, children, older persons and persons with disabilities, who are typically the most vulnerable in the wake of sudden-onset disasters of this natu...
