UNHCR Romania: Ukraine Refugee Situation Update, Weekly Update #198, 1 June 2026

Highlights During the week of 18 May, UNHCR engaged with municipal authorities and other stakeholders to prolong the stay of 45 refugees from Ukraine in the remaining collective accommodation in the city. The situation was prompted by the absence of a legislative framework governing the continued stay of the residents. UNHCR highlighted the protection risks associated with the decision, particularly for persons with specific vulnerabilities, and advocated for extended timeframes as well as interim or alternative accommodation arrangements. The Municipality allowed residents to remain in the centre, subject to - in line with the proposal of the residents - their payment of utility costs. UNHCR also expressed its readiness to support vulnerability assessments and protection interventions to help identify sustainable, longer-term solutions. During 27–28 May, UNHCR conducted a mission to Iași to support capacity-building efforts related to the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. In cooperation with the Border Police School, UNHCR delivered a two-day training for approximately 30 frontline officers and practitioners on key aspects of the new EU Screening Regulation. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of protection-sensitive screening procedures and enhance their capacity to identify and respond appropriately to individuals with specific protection needs at an early stage of arrival. The training reflects the ongoing cooperation between UNHCR and the Romanian authorities in improving asylum and border management capacities.
