Yemen: Agrometeorological Early Warning Bulletin (01 - 10 June 2026) [EN/AR]

· Relief Web

Country: Yemen Source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Please refer to the attached files. Overview: June typically marks the start of the southwest monsoon season in Yemen, with the first dekad often featuring sporadic, localized convective rainfall. Under normal conditions, the western highlands and coastal plains receive light to moderate rainfall, while the eastern and central desert areas remain largely dry. Key Concerns: Precipitation Conditions: During the first dekad of June 2026, rainfall was largely absent or very light across most of the country, creating unfavorable conditions for rain-fed crop establishment and rangeland recovery. At the same time, isolated but intense rainfall events—totaling 40–60 mm in parts of Ibb Governorate—likely improved short-term water availability. However, forecasts from the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) indicate roughly a 40% probability that below-average rainfall will persist across the southwestern region, which could limit the sustainability of these benefits. Soaring temperatures: Consistent with the last dekad of May 2026, temperatures are expected to continue rising during the first dekad of June 2026. While the IRI forecast indicates a widespread probability of above-average precipitation across much of the country, persistently high temperatures are likely to prevail in the interior desert areas of Hadramaut and Al Maharah, where daytime highs may exceed 42°C. Coastal areas along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are also expected to see temperatures of 35°C to 40°C. Areas affected by heatwave conditions (Fig. 1) are likely to experience accelerated soil-moisture losses due to increased evapotranspiration, potentially reducing the benefits of rainfall for rain-fed agriculture, rangelands, and livest...
