Mozambique: UNHCR Protection Monitoring Report - Cabo Delgado and Nampula (March 2026)

· Relief Web

Country: Mozambique Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Please refer to the attached Infographic. CONTEXT Significant protection risks persist across Cabo Delgado in March 2026 driven by sustained non-state armed group (NSAG) attacks on civilians, including forced displacement, family separation, GBV, loss of civil documentation, and severe trauma. Lack of food and water (as reported by 60% of the Key Informant Interviews this month) further exacerbates protection risks by forcing affected people to engage in harmful coping mechanisms, such as begging, child marriage and labour exploitation to meet their basic needs. While direct NSAG attacks were less frequent, due to the rainy season and Ramadan, NSAG pressure persists through killings in Mocimboa da Praia, armed clashes in Macomia, as well as looting (Metuge), resource extortion (Ancuabe, Meluco), and control of key corridors (Nangade). These incidents directly threaten civilian safety, access to livelihoods, and freedom of movement.
