CHINA Between 17 and 18 May, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides and mudslides across Yongchuan District in Chongqing Municipality, south-western China, resulting in significant damage in multiple towns and subdistricts. National and local authorities continue to undertake rescue and relief operations, with 697 people evacuated and further 1,444 relocated and resettled. In response, the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction activated a Level-IV emergency response for floods and geological disasters, while Ministry of Emergency Management deployed a working team to support local authorities and conduct assessments in affected areas. AFGHANISTAN On 22 May, heavy rainfall and flash floods in Laghman Province, Afghanistan, reportedly killed five people, including a staff member of the Danish Refugee Council, and caused damage to infrastructure, seasonal crops and transport routes, temporarily disrupting traffic along the Kabul–Jalalabad highway. Flooding between 22 and 23 May also affected the northern provinces of Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan, reportedly resulting in fatalities, injuries and damage to homes, livelihoods and agricultural land, affecting hundreds of households. Initial inter-agency assessments identified at least 260 affected families across northern and north-eastern provinces, while verification process and additional assessments remain ongoing. BANGLADESH Bangladesh has reported more than 8,000 confirmed measles cases and over 57,000 suspected cases across all 64 districts as of 20 May, with children under five accounting for 81 per cent of reported infections.
